Advanced Low Vision Aids for Enhanced Independence and Clarity
At Optic Edge, we understand that traditional vision correction isn’t always enough. For patients with significant visual impairment due to conditions like macular degeneration, glaucoma, or diabetic retinopathy, standard glasses may not fully restore clarity. That’s why we offer professional support and solutions through specialised low vision aids—custom tools designed to maximise remaining sight, improve independence, and enhance quality of life.
Low vision doesn’t mean no vision. With the right aids and guidance, patients with partial sight can often return to meaningful tasks like reading, writing, and navigating familiar spaces. Our experienced team offers personalised consultations, precise low vision assessments, and access to a wide range of optical and electronic devices designed to help you live more comfortably and confidently.

What Is Low Vision?
Low vision refers to visual impairment that cannot be corrected with regular glasses, contact lenses, or surgery. It may result from eye conditions that damage the retina or optic nerve and typically leads to a permanent reduction in vision, even with conventional corrective methods.
Common Causes of Low Vision
The most common medical causes of low vision include age-related macular degeneration, advanced glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, and inherited retinal diseases. These conditions affect central or peripheral vision and may lead to blind spots, blurred sight, or extreme light sensitivity.
Symptoms of Low Vision
People with low vision may notice difficulty reading print, recognizing faces, navigating in dim lighting, judging depth or contrast, or seeing details clearly at any distance. These symptoms can interfere with daily activities, making it challenging to maintain independence without assistance.
The Role of Low Vision Aids
Low vision aids are tools that enhance usable vision rather than replace it. They work by magnifying images, increasing contrast, or making visual information easier to interpret. With training and support, these aids allow individuals to regain control over daily tasks and experience improved quality of life.
Who Can Benefit from Low Vision Aids?
Low vision aids are suitable for individuals who have been diagnosed with visual impairment that persists despite optimal medical treatment or standard eyewear. Patients with 20/70 vision or worse in the better-seeing eye, even with glasses, may benefit from low vision solutions.
Ideal Candidates Include:
Patients with central vision loss due to macular degeneration
Individuals with peripheral vision loss from glaucoma
People with diabetic eye disease resulting in patchy or blurred vision
Seniors experiencing visual decline that impairs daily function
Children or young adults with inherited or developmental vision disorders
If you’re no longer able to perform tasks like reading a newspaper, checking a phone screen, or recognising people’s faces, low vision aids may restore a sense of ability and independence.
Types of Low Vision Aids Available at Optic Edge
We offer a wide variety of low vision aids to address diverse visual challenges. During your consultation, our optometrists evaluate your functional vision and lifestyle to recommend the most appropriate tools for your needs.
Optical Magnifiers
These traditional magnifiers enlarge text or images, making them easier to see. They come in hand-held, stand-mounted, or spectacle-mounted forms.
Hand-held magnifiers: Ideal for short-term reading of menus, price tags, or small print
Stand magnifiers: Provide a stable view for longer reading sessions or writing tasks
Magnifying reading glasses: Worn like regular glasses for hands-free use
Bar or dome magnifiers: Used for scanning long lines of text with even magnification
Electronic Video Magnifiers
Also known as CCTVs or digital magnifiers, these devices use a camera and screen to display text or images at adjustable sizes and contrast levels. They allow for dynamic zoom, colour inversion, and image enhancement.
Desktop video magnifiers: Perfect for extended reading or paperwork at home
Portable video magnifiers: Small enough to carry, ideal for use in stores or while travelling
Tablet-based options: Combine mobile technology with custom vision software
Telescopic Lenses
Telescopic aids allow users to view distant objects more clearly. These are often mounted on glasses and are helpful for watching TV, attending events, or recognising street signs.
Monocular telescopes: Used for one eye and typically hand-held
Bioptic telescopes: Mounted in glasses for mobility and outdoor use
Focusable models: Allow adjustment between near and distant viewing
Filters and Tints
Light sensitivity is a major problem for many people with low vision. Tinted lenses and UV filters improve contrast and reduce glare, especially for patients with retinal damage.
Yellow, amber, or grey tints: Enhance contrast depending on lighting conditions
Polarised filters: Reduce reflections for greater clarity outdoors
Custom filter glasses: Tailored to specific conditions like retinitis pigmentosa or albinism
Large-Print and Adaptive Devices
Low vision extends beyond magnification. Our clinics also provide recommendations for items that support everyday life for visually impaired patients.
Large-print books and calendars
Talking watches and electronic readers
Contrast-enhancing writing tools and kitchen aids
Voice-activated smartphone features and screen readers
Customisation and Follow-Up
We ensure your aids fit comfortably, match your vision parameters, and support your intended activities. Follow-up appointments are scheduled to adjust devices, monitor progress, and introduce advanced solutions if needed.
Our Low Vision Assessment Process
A standard eye exam is not enough to evaluate low vision. At Optic Edge, we provide in-depth assessments that measure more than just acuity—we evaluate contrast sensitivity, field of view, and how your remaining vision functions in real-life tasks.
Comprehensive Low Vision Evaluation
We begin with a detailed history of your condition, challenges, goals, and previous solutions. The exam includes:
Measurement of visual acuity with magnification
Evaluation of contrast sensitivity and light response
Peripheral field testing
Trial of various low vision aids based on your goals
This assessment allows us to design a personalised plan using the most appropriate tools and training for your specific needs.
Trial and Training Sessions
Once we identify the aids that could benefit you, we allow you to trial different tools and receive guided training on how to use them effectively. You’ll learn techniques for scanning, focusing, adjusting lighting, and integrating devices into your daily routine.
Benefits of Using Low Vision Aids
Low vision aids can significantly improve quality of life. While they do not cure the underlying condition, they help patients adapt, function independently, and feel more in control of their environment.
Improved ability to read, write, and view screens
Greater ease navigating familiar spaces
Renewed confidence in public and social settings
Reduced reliance on others for simple tasks
More comfort in bright light or glare-heavy conditions
Our goal is to empower patients to live independently and enjoy daily life with more clarity and comfort.
Low Vision Support for All Ages
Low vision affects people across all age groups. At Optic Edge, we cater to the specific needs of children, working adults, and seniors with custom support plans.
Children with Low Vision
For children, early intervention is crucial. Our low vision services include tools for classroom learning, visual tracking, and confidence building. We collaborate with educators and families to integrate support into a child’s daily environment.
Adults Managing Vision Loss
Vision loss during the working years can be overwhelming. We provide tools that help adults adapt to work environments, perform household tasks, and navigate digital screens. From portable magnifiers to computer-accessible technology, we find practical solutions for modern life.
Senior Vision Independence
Vision decline in older adults often leads to loss of independence. Our solutions support reading medication labels, enjoying hobbies like knitting or crossword puzzles, and staying mobile with safe visual cues. We help seniors stay engaged, active, and safe at home or in public.

Our service goes beyond devices. We offer emotional support and lifestyle guidance to help patients adjust to changes in vision. Our staff understands the frustration and fear that can come with losing sight, and we’re committed to walking with you through the journey with compassion and care.
